If a generative AI program writes a text, or a song, or creates a visual work, can that work be copyrighted?

In most jurisdictions, this comes down to whether the AI program is an "author" for the purposes of copyright law.
Currently, the U.S., the EU and Australia laws all provide that an author must be a natural person, in other words, works generated by AI are not copyrightable.
In contrast, the U.K., India, New Zealand and Ireland, provide that, in the case of any work generated by software (which presumably includes works generated by AI software) that the programmers of the software (technically the people "by whom the arrangements necessary for the creation of the work are undertaken") are considered the authors.
